Restore With Resilience Community Coral Restoration– Hana Pūko‘a
The Coral Resilience Lab at the Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology, Mālama Maunalua, Kuleana Coral Restoration, NOAA, and DAR are working together with permission from the local community to restore coral reefs across the Hawaiian Islands. In order to expand to large-scale restoration, Restore With Resilience (RWR) focuses on corals of opportunity (COO), corals that have been detached from the reef and are unlikely to survive on their own, to avoid further disruption to intact reefs.
RWR invites members of the community to participate in coral restoration efforts focused in Maunalua Bay. These events, Hana Pūko’a, working together for coral, are the first community-based coral restoration efforts in Hawai‘i. Volunteers assist with tagging whole coral colonies, photographing corals of opportunity, fragmenting corals and gluing to plugs to be used in a thermal stress test, and learn about how we identify thermally resilient corals. RWR also partners with local organizations and invites them to host educational booths to share their message with the community.
